12/19/2008 Companys Says Sony To Support 3D Gaming In 2009 According to Neil Schneider, President and CEO of Meant to be Seen (MTBS), Blitz Games Studios has confirmed that Sony “fully intends” to support stereoscopic 3D gaming and Blu-ray 3D on PS3 in 2009 with their Blitz Tech engine. MTBS is a stereoscopic 3D Certification and Advocacy group. [more info]
12/19/2008 Tough Times For Free Radical, EA The holiday season is traditionally the biggest time of year for the gaming industry, but a variety of factors is contributing to some major upheaval in at least a few developers. Free Radical Design, a development studio known for its TimeSplitters series as well as the widely panned 2008 release Haze, has closed its doors at least temporarily, barring further announcements. Reports say that Haze’s poor reception was at least partially responsible behind a collapsed development deal with LucasArts on an unannounced title. The company was also working on TimeSplitters 4. 12/16/2008 Club Nintendo Finally Live In North America North Americans gamers whose eyes are sore from casting envious looks toward their Japanese and European counterparts, rejoice! Nintendo has launched the North American version of Club Nintendo, a loyalty program that rewards players for buying games, systems and accessories with a variety of exclusive and limited-edition merchandise. After registering at Nintendo.com, players can enter codes included in Nintendo products. Once a survey is completed, users are rewarded with “Coins,” which can be redeemed for items like the Game & Watch Collection for the DS or a Nintendo-themed deck of traditional Japanese playing cards. 12/15/2008 Spike VGA Impressions And Red Carpet Interviews Yesterday night we made it out to the Spike VGAs and not only had the chance to sit in on the event live, but also to cover the red carpet beforehand. We snapped photos and chatted with some of the biggest names in gaming, such as Peter Moore, Will Wright, Hideo Kojima, Todd Howard and Cliff Bleszinski. Yeah, yeah, Marisa Miller, Kim Kardashian and Stacy Keibler were there, too, but we were more impressed with the talent behind all of the season’s best titles. [more info]
12/15/2008 Pearl Jam’s Ten Coming To Rock Band In March Harmonix and MTV Games announced that Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten will be coming to Rock Band on March 24, 2009—coinciding with the reissue of the 1991 album. Some of Pearl Jam’s most well-known tracks came from that album, including Even Flow, Jeremy and Alive (which was included in Rock Band 2). [more info]

12/12/2008 Nintendo Sets New U.S. Hardware Sales Record, Gears 2 Leads Software The Wii sold 2.04 million units in November, a new all-time record for a non-December month in the United States, according to NPD Group, which tracks video-game sales in the U.S. Nintendo DS sold 1.56 million units itself, recording the second highest hardware sales in a non-December month. 12/12/2008 EA Set To Publish Formerly Homeless Brutal Legend It seems like you can’t keep a good game down. EA and Double Fine Productions today announced that Brutal Legend—one of the casualties of the Activision Blizzard merger—is getting a home at EA Partners, set for a fall 2009 release on the PS3 and Xbox 360. We first brought you world-exclusive details on the game in our November 2007 issue of Game Informer magazine. In case you weren’t paying attention (or more likely, forgot), Brutal Legend is the latest from the legendary mind of Tim Schafer (Psychonauts! Grim Fandango!). It stars Jack Black as roadie Eddie Riggs, who sets out on an over-the-top quest to vanquish evil with his hot rod, guitar and ax. [more info]
